Eulogy written by family for Joseph

Joe was a caring father and devoted to his family and community. He was born in Berg en Terblijt, Holland March 13, 1949, and immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta with his father, mother, sister and brother in 1952. The family moved into the community of Beverly (now east part of Edmonton) and the Weber family grew to include five brothers and four sisters. He attended school in the community and eventually took trade school at St Joseph High School. He met Barbara Jean Carmichael and they were married December 14, 1968, at the age of nineteen. He attended Nait and received his diploma in Plumbing / Pipefitting. In 1969, their daughter Margaret Mary was born and in 1971 their son Jack Donald followed. The family moved from Edmonton to Bon Accord in 1972 where they had their second daughter Patricia Jean in 1973. Joe joined the local adult hockey club and played with the Coronado Cougars and Bon Accord Outlaws. He passed his love of hockey to his children by having skating rinks in the backyard.

In 1975, Joe and Barb went for a drive and came across a lot overlooking a valley and the Sturgeon River and fell in love! It was always a dream of Joe’s to live in the country. The lot was bought, a house package ordered, and while working in Fort McMurray, Joe came home to build the house in his spare time. The family lived in a tent trailer the summer that the house was getting built and eventually moved into the basement while the main floor was being finished. On September 1, 1977, the family moved upstairs, and they welcomed their third daughter Anne Elizabeth. Once settled on the acreage, Joe purchased some horses where he did competitive trail riding, and his love of horses followed him throughout the years. When Jack joined the Gibbons Minor Hockey Association, Dad became involved in the hockey program as a parent and coach which he did for many years.. even after Jack was done playing. Joe loved being a part of the community and tried to volunteer where he could. He was always up for some good competition and one year during the Gibbons Agri-Fair, he entered the home baked chocolate cake class and won first prize! Joe loved sports and being outside working on the acreage.

In the late 1980’s, Joe and Barb purchased a school bus, and this eventually grew to a business with 7 buses. When Joe was unable to work as a pipefitter, he went on to drive a bus to the Redwater Schools. A profession that he loved and did right up to his early 70’s where he drove 2 generations of kids. Also in the late 1980’s, Joe’s friend Tom Walter approached Joe to enlist him in the construction of Goose Hummock Golf Course where he used his beloved Ford tractor to build some of the Hummocks. With such a connection to this local golf course, Joe and Barb had memberships and spent many days golfing there with their friends. Dad even had a momentous moment on the course, where he got an albatross (2 on a par 5)!

He had motorcycles and quads and loved to spend time riding with family and friends. In 2004 while riding his quad with friends and family, dad was in an accident and was rushed to the hospital where he spent 3 weeks in intensive care and 3 more months in Fort Saskatchewan Hospital convalescing. This accident did not slow Joe down; he continued to ride his motorcycle and new Polaris Ranger and snowmobiles. In late 2000’s Joe and Barb were convinced by their best friends – Len and Mickey Schwanke to purchase a lake lot at Eagles Nest RV Resort on Moyie Lake where they would spend their summers enjoying lake activities and catching up with Len and Mickey. Joe cherished this time and looked forward to it every year.

Family was everything to Joe…there were many family BBQs and wiener roasts. Joe loved having the grandkids – Kenny, Katlyn, Sheldon, Aiden and Scott come to the acreage to play and visit. Joe lived at the acreage and enjoyed 47 wonderful years there. In 2022, after some health complications, Joe and Barb sold the acreage and moved into a condo in Gibbons. There, he tried to get used to condo living but struggled with this new lifestyle. He was still able to visit the acreage as it was still in the family and it gave him something to look forward to…like cutting the lawn when his health allowed it. On June 27th2025 Joe went to Sturgeon Hospital where he remained until October 9thwhen he was transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for a possible surgery. His health declined rapidly and at 3 am on October 15thwith his wife and daughter at his side, Joe passed away. Many thanks to the nurses at both hospitals and all the extended family that came to sit vigil with Joe during the last week of his life.

Ride on in Heaven Joe!
