It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of David Gordon Gale, surrounded by his family, on October 3, 2020, at his home in Bon Accord, AB. Dave was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland July 1, 1942 to Arthur and Helen, the first of 12 children. He lived a full life and brought immense joy and laughter to all who knew him.

David is already deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Sheila Gale (nee Robertson); his children, Heather (Hugh) Alexander, Barbara (Dean) Hamdon, Lori (Scott) Bouchard and Bradley (Lyn) Gale; his cherished grandchildren, David (Rebekah) Alexander, Ashley (Mitchell) Small, Shaylina (Roy) Babb, Maliha Hamdon, Nathan Doctor, Jenessa Doctor, Olivia Bouchard, Beau (James) Miller, Jade (Leo) Adams and Kaine (Amanda) Rogers; his precious great grandchildren, Benjamin and Sophie Alexander, Kale, Emma, and Kaydan Dvorak, Cody & Zak Miller; his siblings, Adeline (Bernie) Gale, Emma (Ron) Mac Neil, Brother John Gale, Dan (Marg) Gale, Martha (Jim) Moore, Catherine (Dave) Mac Neil, Ellen (Dave) Turner, Loretta (Brent) Murdock and Hughie (Dayle) Gale. Dave leaves behind a very long list of sister and brother in laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends from all over the world.

Dave was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Art & Helen (nee Copland) Gale; his brother, Tom Gale; his sister, Mary Mac Neil and others he loved who left before him.

Dave was an absolute warrior as he battled his Cancer diagnosis. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the amazing medical professionals that worked with Dave during these past few years. A special thanks to the amazing Dr.King, Oncologist, Cross Cancer Institute and her wonderful team Derrick, Stephen and Lauren to name a few. A big thanks to the Morinville Home Care team lead by Amanda, to Dr.Okolie, Bon Accord Medical and to Tara and Jessica for all their compassion. Lastly, a thank you to the Gibbons EMS team Lee, Chelsea and Riley. Your quiet presence was appreciated beyond words. Our family is touched by all the kindness Dave was shown. We will be forever grateful.

It is with reverence that the family of Mary Margaret Catagas announces her peaceful passing with family by her side in Bon Accord, Alberta at 6:03 a.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the age of 69 years.

Mary was born on January 6, 1951, in Clanwilliam, Manitoba, Canada, to John Alexander Catagas and Rose Ann Amyotte. She and her siblings were raised on the Tootinaowaziibeeng (Valley River 63A) Treaty Reserve east of Roblin, MB. During her lifetime, Mary lived all across Canada and the United States including in Winnipeg, Dauphin and Oklahoma City with many years spent in Edmonton.

Mary was very proud of her son, Sean, whom she loved dearly. They spent many hours watching westerns and martial arts movies together and loved to eat out at different places. She worked in many jobs over the years ranging from home care worker to security guard. Mary enjoyed collecting trinkets, reading books, attending Cree classes and doing beadwork. She loved to get out and ride her bike, listen to gospel or country music and absolutely loved sweets!!! Mary had an amazing personality which drew people into her circle of friends. She was known for being spunky, stubborn, caring, independent, loving, giving and having room in her heart for everyone.

She was honoured to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since her baptism on August 30, 1980. She had amazing faith and loved going to church. She felt it helped her learn to be a good mother to her son. In the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, Mary found a loving Jesus who guided her throughout life and, now, back again to her heavenly home.

Mary is survived by her son, Sean (Nicole) Catagas of Bon Accord, AB; grandchildren, Chanell Yvonne House, Tanya Mary Nepoose, Cesar Oscar Blood, Jaysen Nepoose, Kayden Storm Paul Catagas, Dakota Lee Howard Catagas, Nakita Rain Mary Catagas and Kyda Skye Victoria House; honourary grandchildren, Dawn Barrett, Charity House, Tyler Cooper, Wade Nepoose, Pesch Nepoose, JLynn Wilson, Dominic Wilson and James Deering; siblings, Jeanette Catagas of Brandon, MB and Mervin (Mildred) Catagas of Roblin, MB; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

She has reunited with her parents, John Catagas and Rose Ann Amyotte; step-father, Philip Anderson and step-mother, Ida Houle; siblings, Nellie Lena May, Ernest Winston, Gerald “David” Wendell, Evelyn Emily, and Charles Gordon Catagas; Roy Alfred, Charity, Stanley, and Joseph Edwin Anderson; and Norman Catagas. Mary will be interred at the New Anglican Cemetery in Tilton, NL, near her grandson Nicholas Sean Young-Catagas.

May 8, 1984 ~ September 9, 2020

It is with heavy hearts the family of Gloria Ann Barley announce her sudden passing at age 36 years, at the University of Alberta Hospital with her family by her side. Gloria is survived by her 2 children, Donte and Ayanna; parents, Arne Hass and Barbara Barley; sister, Colette (Inderjit); brother, Jonathan (Karmen); 3 nephews, Ajay, Ashton and Damien; best friend (sister) Christine (Daniel) and Lehland; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends.

November 4, 1932 ~ September 10, 2020

She softly smiled and looked into the sad eyes of her husband and daughters and she said “So long, country bumpkin, the frost is gone now from on the pumpkin. I’ve seen some sights and life’s been something. See you later country bumpkin”.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Elsie Hicks (nee Letersky) who passed away September 10, 2020 at the age of 87 years. Elsie was the glue that held together a large family of 6 girls, 14 grand kids, 15 great grand kids and a loving husband. The passion she had for her family was undeniable and allowed for each of us to truly grasp the powerful relationship between a husband and wife. Terry and Elsie went through good times and bad, never losing sight of what was important – their family.
Her perfect sassy attitude and love for her family will live on in each family member and the many wonderful memories of Elsie Hicks will be forever cherished by all.

She is survived by husband, Terry; children, Debbie (George), Ryan ( Lauren, Everett & Kemper), Brett ( Mark, Dylan, Caleb, Blake). Betty passed away peacefully on March 23, 2020 at Royal Alexandra Hospital at the age of 78 years old. Elizabeth will be lovingly remembered by her sons, James Jr. (Debbie) and John (Cythnia); daughters, Gabriel (Bob) and Beverly; grand children, Jeff, Daemon, Bradley, Jasmine, Jasmine, Ashley, and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren, Hailey, Macey, Paige, and Abbey; brothers, Barry, Bill and Brett; sister, Brenda; step brothers, Brian, Joe, Jack and David; step sister, Billie Jo; as well as numerous niece, nephews, extended family and friends.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, James; parents, Bruce and Vera; daughter in law, Gail; and son in law, Rick.

Elizabeth loved reading, knitting, crochet, gardening, animals, watching tv, word search books, cooking, decorating, and sitting in a lazy boy chair. Elizabeth worked at Alberta Agriculture, Food & Rural Development for 38 years plus other jobs.

November 2, 1938 ~ February 5, 2020

Jim passed away peacefully on February 5, 2020 at Rivercrest Care Centre at the age 81 years. James will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty; sons, James Jr. (Debbie) and John (Cythnia); daughters, Gabriel (Bob) and Beverly; grandchildren, Jeff, Daemon, Bradley, Jasmine, Ashley, and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren, Hailey, Macey, Paige, and Abbey; sister, Shirley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

James was predeceased by his parents, James and Grace; brothers, William “Bill”, Robert “Bobby”; sisters Ethel, and Shirley; daughter in law, Gail; and son in law, Rick.

James loved woodworking, classic cars, outside, gardening, farming, fixing, animals, watching tv, and sitting in a lazy boy chair. James worked at Fiber Glass Canada (Owens Corning) for 38 years plus others jobs. Even though he was grouchy in appearance he always loved his family. He also always had a dog by his side.

The family is sincerely grateful to the staff at Rivercrest Care Centre and Dr. Stecyk for their care in dad’s last few days.

January 29, 1951 ~ August 15, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Nancy Bryant-Bain (née Jones) announces her passing on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the age of 69 years at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton. Nancy is lovingly remembered by her children, Casandra (Nathaniel), Kimberly (Greg) and James (Sirina); her grandchildren, Jack, Isaac, Angus, Brynn and Marcus.

Nancy was born to parents Gloria and Jack Jones, on January 29, 1951 in Weston, York County. She grew up in Etobicoke as a young child, and on a great farmhouse in Caledon East in her teen years. She loved to play baseball and play the guitar as a teen. With her love for folk music, she entered into a number of folk competitions and sang many a Gordon Lightfoot songs. Her summers were spent in Port Carling, Muskoka on Lake Joseph with her large extended family. Nancy loved to recount stories of her mom, dad, and siblings Heather-Anne (predeceased) and husband John, Doug (Donna-Dale), Matthew (Terri), Randy (Treya), Alison (Michael) and Ron (Jackie). Over the years as the family grew, she happily enjoyed time in Muskoka with her children and many nieces and nephews.

A large part of her life was spent in Aurora, Ontario where her children grew up. She worked in administration for the York Region Board of Education. Once her children ‘flew the coup’, Nancy moved to Muskoka with her second husband Allen F. Bain (predeceased) and her beloved pets. She enjoyed the great outdoors and was committed to her work in the service sector.

Nancy eventually moved to Markham to spend time with her children and grandchildren. After she retired, she moved to Gibbons, Alberta to share more of her time with her son and his family.

Her grandchildren will fondly remember the time she spent with them. She nurtured and cared for them as babies and could often be found on the ground playing with them. They loved to play games and sing songs together. In the last few years she was a big fan of their sports activities (rugby, soccer, baseball and hockey) and loved to watch her granddaughter in Scottish Highland dancing.

Nancy will be greatly missed. Her faith and love for God was present every day of her life. Jesus was an incredible source of strength and comfort to her. She was a kind, generous soul who opened her arms to anyone in need. She never missed an opportunity to express her love to her family and was content simply being with them. Even in challenging times, Nancy’s faith in God and love for her family never faltered. She was known for her beautiful singing voice, delicious cooking and her skill with the sewing needle. When younger, she was an avid golfer and played very well. Nancy spent much of her retirement knitting and crocheting for family and friends. She gifted many of her creations to the Vernon Live Well Clinic in Vernon, BC.

Funeral arrangements are being organized and family will be contacted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memoriam to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

We will miss your beautiful spirit, your beautiful eyes and your beautiful smile.

July 21, 1955 ~ August 9, 2020

It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Michael Gabinet.

Gerry was born in Westlock Alberta, July 21, 1955 to Peter Gabinet and Emily Zailo. Gerry is survived by his wife, Annette Anema; his daughter, Darrelle Gabinet; his son, Justin Gabinet; his stepson, James (Connie) Turnbull; stepdaughter, Karen (Krys) Dorozko; his grandchildren, Trinity, Ella Marie and Nolan Turnbull and Maverick Dorozko; his parents, Peter and Mary Gabinet; siblings, Bernadette (Sandy) Lyons, Ron (Debbie) Gabinet, Jennifer (Ken) Anderson, Chris (Veronica) Gabinet; brother-in-law, Robert Huber; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family lived in Busby at the time of his mothers death. Peter moved his family to Vegreville and eventually to Edmonton. He went to St. Cecilia School and graduated from Archbishop O’Leary High School in 1973. He received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1977.

His love for his family was endless. He was quick with his wit and loved to tease everyone. He was an amazing father, step-father and grandfather and loved nothing more than having family get togethers for a meal or a BBQ. He was always willing to help a family member in need whether it was just a listening ear and some advice, or financial. Gerry was the first to jump in and help his friends and neighbours with any task and was quick to volunteer when his co-workers needed help as well. Gerry’s generosity extended beyond family and for several years has sponsored a child through World Vision.

Gerry was very involved in sports and had a passion for skiing and golf. It didn’t matter which game was on there was always a beer bet. On a putt, on a kick or a pass or a goal. There were many great Superbowl and Grey Cup parties at our house with a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. Gerry enjoyed his bike rides in the summer and his walks all year round at 5:45 every morning!

Gerry worked for Molson Brewery coordinating sales and sales promotion activities with the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Eskimos and Namao International Air Show. He sold industrial/commercial real estate which gave him an understanding of the role which economic development plays in community development. He was also in Parkland County and was the Business & Public Affairs Coordinator for a short time.

In 2002 he became the Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Strathcona County. Gerry had a passion for his job at Strathcona County and was well respected in the Community and among his peers in the Economic Development field all across Canada and the U.S. Among his many awards his greatest moment was in 2015 when he won Economic Developer of the year award as selected by his peers. In 2019 he received a lifetime membership award from Economic Developers of Alberta for his mentorship to young Economic Development Officers. Gerry and his team won many awards for marketing, communication, events and for their work in promoting Strathcona County.

Gerry was extremely proud to be part of the Commissionaires of Northern Alberta. He joined the board in 2007 and served on various committees and was in line to be Chairman of the Board when he had to leave due to a cancer diagnosis. He was honoured to be able to help the Veterans and retired police personnel that this organization serviced.

Gerry was an extremely positive and optimistic person. Even in his battle with cancer he remained optimistic it was a temporary set back and it was not going to beat him. He had an infectious laugh, he was a remarkable leader, always encouraging, full of joy and thankfulness. Although Gerry’s years were short he lived a monumental and impactful life. He will always be remembered.

It is with many tears, we must announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma (Muga), Sister, Aunt and Friend, Lynne Tubbs on June 27, 2020, with her family by her side.

Grace, poise and beauty are just a few words to describe our Mom. Mom worked 30 + yrs until her illness would no longer let her, she enjoyed every day, the connections she made with the families, patients, volunteers and co-workers at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Jerry, her generous and loving parents, Dodd and Aileen, her sweet younger sister Carol, her caring Aunt and Uncle Pete and Addie, her fun-loving cousin Dennis and her kindhearted brother Bud.

She is loved and survived by her handsome, generous brother Jim (Sheila), glamorous and kindest youngest sister Patsy, and sweet baby brother Paul (Theresa). Also, her children, loving son, Guy (Colette); thoughtful daughter, Norine (Bob) and sweet baby girl Nicole. Her awesome grandchildren, Dustin, Vincent, Tate, Anthony, Emily, Keenan, Josie and Marley. Cousins, Sharon (Harry), Clifford, sisters in law, Arlene, Paula, Barb (Joe), brothers in law John, Ray (Linda) and many nieces and nephews, that absolutely loved Aunty Lynne. Best friends, Monica, Bev, Illa, Rosemarie, Aileen, Eva, and many more.

So many people touched our mom’s life, every one of you meant so much to her, we know, in your hearts you are feeling the love and gratitude she had for you.

Mom said “What the heck is going on in this world? I think it’s a good time to check out, move on to new opportunities and be with family and friends that I haven’t seen in a while.”

Mom and our family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and staff at the Sturgeon Hospital for making her journey exactly the way she wanted. Covid created challenges that no one would want to have encountered, but the people at the Sturgeon Hospital made it possible to love her and send her on her way with compassion and loving kindness.

Due to Covid and Mom’s request, we will have a celebration, at a later date. With such uncertain times, Mom would want everyone to be safe and take care of each other.

Obstacles in your path are not obstacles, they are your PATH. Make every day a special one, have the life of Riley and donate wherever you feel the need. Good Show. One day at a time.

Leonard Harold Parkin born May 24, 1943 in Calgary, AB passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on July 17, 2020 in St Albert, AB.

An accomplished teacher, consultant and counsellor, he expertly understood people and worked passionately to empower others. Through his work and guiding principles, he profoundly bettered the world around him, choosing a life of connection and caring. He was positive, confident, genuine, accepting, and supportive to all. Those who were guided by his wisdom can attest to his ability to effect change in the world, and challenge anyone else to do the same, one step at a time.

He is predeceased by: his parents Grace (nee Currie) and Harold Parkin; Josephine (nee Chamberlain), daughter Lisbeth; Louise (nee Kennedy), and daughter Michaela.

He is survived by: his children, Brennen (Christina); and Renae (Trevor), grandchildren Wynter, Esmae, Maeve; wife Corinne Helliker, her children; Elissa (Shaun), grandchildren Zoe, Joshua; and Ryland (Shannon); dearest friend Coralie (Philippe), Pierre and Justine; and loving family worldwide.

For Len, family was everywhere; not only rooted all across Canada but in the friendships he highly valued and relationships curated. To all those close to Len, who journeyed alongside him from youth to university through retirement, who filled his head and heart with friendship, love, ideas, and connection: Thank you.

Len’s avid appreciation for music and life’s natural beauty allows us to continue to share special moments with him even after his passing; quiet reflections outdoors, the majesty of the mountains, and especially through melody.
