Lyall Arthur Marshall

November 13, 1933- November 20, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Grandad, and loving husband, Lyall Arthur Marshall. Lyall passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones in the Wildrose Villa Care home, Boyle, Alberta where he resided with his loving wife Emma.

Lyall was born in Innisfail Alberta, November 13, 1933 to Grace (nee Henley) and George Marshall. At the age of 19 he joined the RCMP and from September 1952 to April 1953 completed his first part recruit training at Fairmont Training centre, Vancouver, BC and second part training at Depot Division, Regina SK. His first posting was Security Duty “A” Division Ottawa from April 1953 to March 1954. His second posting was Federal Policing Kenora, Ont. From June 1954 to April 1955. Lyall then went on to serve the remainder of his career at various Detachment postings in “D” Division Manitoba. Staff Sargent Lyall Marshall retired in September 1976 as the Detachment Commander at Flin Flon, MB.

He then went on to Edmonton where he served for 11 years for the Solicitor General as Superintendent of Alberta Highway Patrol. From there, Lyall and his wife retired to Vernon, BC and resided there until 2012 when they made the move to Athabasca, AB to be closer to family.

Lyall is survived by “the delight of his life” wife, Emma; daughter, Catherine “Cathie” (Bill); sons, Brian (Shaun) and Mark (Lori); along with grandchildren, Curtis(Crystal), Eric (Kelly), Jeffrey (Selina), Jenna and Matthew (Caylie); great grandchildren, Callianne, Cole, Alexander, Mythius, Boone, Lewin, Mabel and Miles. Lyall is also survived by sister, Elizabeth, (Liz) from Stettler, AB; brother, John (Colette) from Courtney, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Grace Elizabeth (nee Henley) Marshall-Mayhew, and George William Marshall; stepfather, Earl Tracey Mayhew; and sister, Eunice Marshall Sheilds.

Lyall was a man of many talents, he loved working with animals, especially horses, and woodworking, he built their house in Vernon, He also loved being around his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and had a playful and mischievous spirit around them. He quite often loved to play practical jokes, but he was also a very pragmatic man and one that many turned to for advice. Lyall always put others first and made sure their needs were being met. He always looked for solutions and came up with very creative inventions to solve many problems. We will always remember that twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes and the powerful legacy he has left, work hard, speak truth, family first.

A private memorial ceremony will be held in the near future in Colinton, AB.

An interment ceremony will be held at a later date at the RCMP Depot in Regina, SK.

The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and compassion provided to Lyall, his wife and family at the Wildrose Villa in Boyle, AB. To all the medical staff, and Villa staff, you were a wonderful support to our family at this difficult time. Also thank you to Dr. Mol, Dr. Klopper, Dr. Honiball, Dr. Fourie, and all other medical professionals and medical staff in Athabasca and Boyle that have been a part of Lyall’s care over the past several years.

Rest in peace Dad until we meet again.

Donald Gary Janzen

October 22, 1955 ~ October 6, 2023

Donald Gary Janzen, 67, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away at his residence on October 6, 2023.

Don was born on October 22, 1955, to Norman Janzen and Margaret Janzen (Groening) in Winkler, Manitoba, and was the first born of six children. Don was baptized on December 11, 2010, at St. Luke’s Zion Lutheran Church, Winnipeg, Manitoba by Pastor Lynne Hutchison.

Don was a truck driver throughout his entire adult life and had an excellent work ethic. He drove long distance across Canada and the U.S., and as well he spent some time in Whitehorse, Yukon, with the most recent years Owner/Operator work in Edmonton, Alberta. He was very knowledgeable in fixing things. If there was something he didn’t know he would research the problem and figure things out. He was the go-to person when family and friends’ cars needed fixing, tires changed, oil changes etc. Don was genuine; what you saw is who he was. He was very personable as well as a private person in regards to his personal life. He was real!

In 2015, Don met Shannon at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Don and Shannon shared the past seven and a half years together. Together they enjoyed many, many miles touring on Don’s Harley, as well as together with friends, their weekends together were special. They enjoyed Country music and playing guitar together. Their love for each other was very special and unique. As Don put it “every mile they traveled together on his bike were the best miles he could have ever hoped for”. Don will be greatly missed by Shannon.

Don’s last visit to Winnipeg, Manitoba was in August of 2019. It was a short, however memorable visit. During this visit Don took his niece Thera for a long ride on his Harley alongside his brother Randy. A memory they will both cherish.

As well as a wonderful visit with his sister Joanne and husband Albert. Don enjoyed his trips to Manitoba for the most part; exceptions being the loss of several family members which was so very hard for him. There were also many phone calls shared together over the years he lived in Edmonton.

Don’s friends were very dear to him; he was respected and loved by many. Something he did not share with his family was that he was given a ‘nick-name’ by his friends which was ‘Chrome’ Don loved adding chrome to his Harley, there was always room for one more piece of chrome.

Don was predeceased by brother Kevin in 1968, father Norman in 2006. niece Jody in 2009, brother Rick in 2010, mother Margaret in 2010.

Left to mourn are Don’s two sons, David and Reese; girlfriend, Shannon; sister, Joanne (Albert); brothers, Brad, Randy and Jeff; nieces, Tracy (Jordan) and Ashley; nephews, Michel (Tammy), Ryan (Kailea), Corey (Leanne), Kayden and Sage; great-nieces, Thera, Emma, Norah, Emily and Abigail; great-nephews, Malakai, Owen, Parker and Brody; aunt, Eileen; uncle, Abe (Mary); as well as many, many cousins and friends.

Viewing for family and friends was held on October 17, 2023 at Sturgeon Memorial Funeral Chapel, Bon Accord, Alberta prior to cremation.

Honorary Pallbearers:
Brad Janzen, Randy Janzen, Dan Shaw,
Rick Haddock, Terry Sutcliffe, Gary Labrecque
