March 5, 1927 – May 14, 2025
Jean Filipchuk of Thorhild AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at the age of 98 at the Seton-Jasper Health Care Centre surrounded by her family. She will be forever remembered by her son Richard and daughter in law Roxanne, her 5 grandchildren; Kaitlin Mykyte (Stephen), Morgan Filipchuk (Ethan), also Taylor Filipchuk, Aidan Filipchuk(Jordy) and Tanner Filipchuk (Val), and their mother Karen; three great grandchildren, Leo, Marlowe and Stetson; sisters, Rose Iwaskiw, Tillie (Peter) Boyko, and Vera Amalia; and sisters in-laws, Karen Amalia and Joan Amalia. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, her son Gerald, her parents John and Anna, brothers Alec, Nick and George, and sisters, Anne, Mary, Nellie, Kaye and Nancy, and infant brother and sister Nick and Ruth.
Jean lived a long and full life. She came to Canada when she was three years old with her parents. She spoke of how hard her family had to work to build their homestead and break the land. This is where her hard work ethic began and continued throughout her life. She, alongside her husband Bill, farmed together and raised their sons at Franchere, AB. In the mid 70’s they sold the farm and retired to Bonnyville. After Bill’s death in 1995, Jean moved to her house on Richard’s and Roxanne’s farm in 2001 so that she could be closer to family. She resided there until she had to move into care 10 years ago. Jean was an amazing cook who was able to make the tastiest meals out of the most basic ingredients. Her Ukrainian food was the best! She shared her love of cooking and passed down her recipes and instructions to her daughters-in-law and granddaughters. She was an avid gardener and could make any plant grow and flourish. It was hard to find a weed in her garden. Working in her garden was her happy place and it resulted in the most beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetables. Her last years were difficult as she lost her hearing, sight and mobility. Losing her sight was especially difficult as she was no longer able to read the bible or watch the news. Jeanwas a woman of very strong faith, and we are comforted in knowing that she is now in the promised land with her Lord and Savior.
Special thanks to the staff at the Seton Jasper Health Care Centre in Jasper, Alberta where they cared for her during her final week of life as well as all of the staff at the Redwater Health Care Centre for their care and compassion over the last several years.
