After High School Melvin attended Lakeland College in Vermillion and was a proud member of the alumni, frequently attending the annual reunions at the school. Melvin and his wife, Norma Rigney, raised their three children, Sheila, Neil and Craig on the family farm where he was raised. Along with farming Melvin drove bus for the local school division, a job he proudly did for over 40 years. Melvin enjoyed playing hockey, a passion he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Melvin had a passion for many things and kept himself busy on his many projects and ideas. Melvin loved to learn, create and be involved in anything that interested him.

Melvin has been described as a very social person, he would go out of his way to say hello to anyone he knew. He was always willing to help his family and friends repair or fix anything that wasn’t working and was a wealth of knowledge on older machinery. Melvin was incredibly talented and could often learn something new without much instruction. He loved going to watch his kids and grandkids compete in sport and would always proudly wear a hat with the team logo on it. He will be missed by so many.

Charles Westra

July 20, 1942 ~ June 16, 2022

On June 16, 2022, at age 79, an asthma attack freed Charles Westra from the pain that his earthly body was experiencing. While we are beyond sad to be without such an amazing man, we rejoice that he spent his last day doing everything he loves to do. After a full day, he sat down in his favorite chair one last time to close his eyes to earth and open them to eternity.

Charlie was born in Calgary on July 20, 1942 to Miriam and Kornelius Westra. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Jenny, while working as a heavy duty mechanic. Over the next 6 years, they welcomed their three children, David, Cheryl and Martin.

In 1973, the young family moved to the Gibbons area to pursue his dream of farming. Over the years the farm and family grew, with all the rewards and challenges that came along with them.

David and Martin went on to join the farm while Cheryl moved to the city to pursue a career in nursing. In 1993, Charlie was blessed with his first two grandchildren, Megan and Stephanie. In 1995, Martin married Cindy and joined the family farm. Over the years, his family expanded even more, with Justin and Curtis in 1996, Shamus in 1997, Aidan in 1999, and Kate in 2001. Megan and Stephanie brought more happiness into the family by each marrying a Sam in 2017 and 2019 respectively. On January 15, 2022, he was overjoyed to welcome his first great grandchild, Harley.

Charlie was an unstoppable force. Even after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s and having to step away from farming, he found new happiness through the art of woodworking. His passion was evident in all the things he created, from furniture to model farm equipment, bowls and wine goblets. There are many homes with an original Charles Westra art piece in it and these pieces will continue to bring joy to all those who see them.

He got to spread even more of his light by being involved in pastoral care throughout his life and being a leader in his church and choir in Yuma. Throughout their tenure snowbirding in Yuma, Charlie brought his talents to serve many people in the community by fixing things such as golf carts and screen doors, and was happy to be rewarded with pie or jam.

Charlie was a light to every person who met him and will be missed by all.

Joey Allan Knutson

In Loving Memory
Born: January 4th, 1977
Passed Away: April 19th, 2022

Joey Allan Knutson, he was the living embodiment of his favorite hero, Superman. Strong, smart, charming, and of course an awesome sense of humor. He loved to help those in need and would step up to protect those he loved. He enjoyed gaming, playing his guitar, camping with his family, collecting memorabilia, and cheering for his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills. He was an unforgettable man, anyone who met him instantly liked him. His wit and sense of humor were unparalleled, and he was hands down the best chef around. He would chat daily with his cousins, and sometimes would spend long nights hanging out with them, it brought him so much joy to be so close to his family. He also loved spending his days with his best friend and beloved partner, Alanna. Even though they never got to grow old together, the love they shared and the time they spent with each other will forever remain in her heart. To his son, Shay, he will be remembered as the hero he was, a shining example of a true man. He and his brothers, Trevor, Travis, Justin, and Robert had the greatest adventures; they will always cherish and smile back on those memories. His dad, Keith, will always be proud of the amazing son he was. On April 19th, 2022, Joey got to be with his beautiful mother, Arlene, as he crossed over the Bifrost into Valhalla. All his friends and family will miss their gentle giant. Even though he is no longer amongst us he will remain with us forever, in memory and love. The afterlife is another adventure awaiting, and just as he wrote in his song ” And through it all, I’m still standing tall”.
